The dangers of the heating season for cats: 4 things to watch out for when winter comes

As soon as winter arrives, the heating season also begins, which on the one hand gives a very pleasant, cozy, homey feeling. But in addition to this, it can certainly have some disadvantages. Because heating is a common cause of dry skin, which threatens not only us humans, but also our cats.

1. What is the right temperature for your cat?

First of all, it is important to determine what the ideal temperature is for cats, because if it is cold in your home, your kitten can easily catch a cold, so it is worth setting a temperature that is ideal for it. For pets, this can usually be between 22 and 25 degrees. You must make sure that the temperature does not fall below 18 degrees, as your pet can easily catch a cold.

2. Barricade the radiator

The second and perhaps most important step is to barricade the heater as soon as the heating season arrives. Because if the cat has access to it, it can easily burn itself, which can result in very serious burns. In this way, make sure that the cat cannot access the heater.

3. Dry skin and dandruff

A specific problem in winter is dry skin and the resulting dandruff. This can occur due to the dry air created by the heating, which also often results in coughing and suffocation. Unfortunately, in the case of cats, due to the thick layer of fur, it is difficult to recognize exfoliation caused by dry skin in time, however, as soon as you discover dandruff hiding in the fur, it may be worth contacting a veterinarian to suggest a solution to the problem. In addition, you may want to purchase an air humidifier, which will make the air much more humid, thus eliminating the problem of dry air. In addition, it is also recommended to increase the amount of omega-3 in the cat’s diet, as this also contributes to the fact that the kitten’s skin does not dry out and that its fur remains beautiful and shiny even in the winter.

4. Hair shedding due to dry air

Hair loss can also be caused by dry air, which can be very unpleasant for both the cat and its owner. It is important to know that autumn molting is basically normal, however, if it goes on for a long time and the cat loses its fur even in winter, it is no longer normal at all, and it is definitely worth contacting a veterinarian. The problem can be treated with vitamins and ointments.
