Cats typically give birth twice a year, in spring and autumn. The latter season is less ideal; here’s why.

Spring births are advantageous for our purring pets for several reasons. Firstly, their growth coincides with warmer months, when there’s more sunlight to ensure adequate vitamin D levels. This positively impacts the development of their bones, teeth, reproductive organs, and nervous systems. In contrast, autumn cats may face vitamin deficiencies. They also contend with harsher, unpredictable weather, which increases the risk of various illnesses and hypothermia.

Cats born in autumn need to be better looked after

Additionally, kittens born in autumn experience teething in winter months, which slightly weakens their immune systems, making them more susceptible to illnesses due to reduced resilience.

Interestingly, an animal’s temperament is also influenced by their birth season. According to a study observing 3,100 kittens, autumn-born cats tend to be less social. This is likely due to environmental factors; in rainy, cold weather, most animals seek shelter, limiting social interaction and time spent exploring their surroundings.

Kittens are only really safe indoors

What to look out for when caring for autumn cats?

If your pet was born in autumn or your cat had an autumn litter, it’s crucial to provide the right conditions. Make sure they have a warm, sheltered spot to protect them from the weather. Ideally, keep them indoors and pay extra attention to the home’s temperature.

Good-quality nutrition can prevent various deficiencies. Consult with a veterinarian to see if vitamin supplements or immune boosters are needed. Also, discuss vaccination needs.

Take special care to ensure proper nutrition

You can support socialization through plenty of playtime and introducing them to their surroundings and family members. Give extra time for this, especially if they are the only kitten in the household. (This is common with rescued kittens; they are often found by animal welfare groups after just a few weeks.)

Finally, spaying or neutering is the only sure way to prevent unnecessary litters. You can read more about the benefits of this procedure according to veterinarians here.
